In Milan, the capital of fashion, there are three key terms, high-level formation, professionals and research, which are found at the heart of the numerous fashion design schools.
Milan’s fashion institutes are at the avant-garde in the world for the high level of education that they offer to their students. Many of these are foreign students, attracted by the excellence of the schools, the variety of courses, the potential work opportunities and by the curiosity that is generated by “Made in Italy”.
The list goes on and includes secondary instruction, diplomas, post graduate masters, in-depth seminars and refresher courses for those who already work in the sector. The object of design, from its conception to its actual creation, with all its necessary intermediate steps (figures, models, etc) is the principal subject of study.
Amongst the teaching staff, there are working professionals and the schools compete to employ those that have the most to teach young students. In Milan there are many such professionals and having them in-house favours immediate contact with the working world and can help launch students careers through knowing the “right” people. At the same time it is a rich opportunity for those who work in fashion, stylists, dressmakers, fashion designers and magazine editors, as associating with young people keeps one feeling young and helps to open the mind to new ideas and discover new trends. Furthermore there is the possibility to get to know the various cultures that are increasingly represented amongst the students of the specialist schools.
