“The artist transforms the material appearance of things and transfigures them into images or signs of new life”. These are the words of the painter, William Congdon, who, after an intense artistic career, chose to live and continue his activities as a guest in an old farmhouse close to the city. There he had his easel and, in front of him, the world he wanted to represent and from which he drew inspiration. The Milanese cascine (farmhouses) represent oases of peace and reflection and at the same time, they are precious testimony to the values of the farming culture. In many of these areas where farmhouses are found, large pieces of land were reclaimed and made useful to the community and the signs of the people’s labour are still recognisable, as well as important architectural and artistic traces. In the capital of finance, fashion and design, every morning there are still those who milk cows, thresh wheat, irrigate and gather the fruits of their labour. Here, just around the corner from the metropolis, it is still possible to admire the herons that take flight.
