For centuries, the Lombard capital has been a crossroads of knowledge and has a long tradition as a university centre of research and training, an important role performed at a European and international level. The site of prestigious academic faculties of all disciplines, Milan hosts thousands of students from all over Italy and from numerous foreign countries. The Milanese institutes train professionals in various disciplines and numerous specialist schools also offer a post-university qualification. In the Lombard capital, some of the most prestigious Italian universities with the longest tradition were born. The Politechnico (Technical University) is a benchmark for scientific culture, technology and research, whereas the Università degli Studi di Milano (The University of Milan) is one of the oldest Italian institutes and offers over 130 study courses. The Università Cattolica (the Catholic University), founded by Father Agostino Gemelli in 1921, has become a cultural point of reference and an institution of the city. In recent years, the tertiary education offer has become even richer with new institutes such as the Università degli Studi Milano Bicocca (the University Milan-Bicocca), a multidisciplinary institute that trains professionals in various fields. Nor can the private universities be forgotten, such as the IULM, that offer courses closely tied with the modern professions and in addition, the university institutions of the “Terza Età” or senior citizens (for example Fondazione Card.G.Colombo) that have multiplied notably in recent years. Every year these provide hundreds and thousands of hours of education for adults, subdivided into hundreds of disciplines that cover practically every field of knowledge. The Milanese institutes, aside from offering the more traditional university courses, are amongst the most advanced educational centres in sectors that are typical to the Lombard economy, such as fashion, design and communication. The jewel of the city, however, is the specialist schools, in particular those connected with the world of design, art and fashion, which today have developed their own personality and achieved great fame. The research institutes of Milan are also recognised as centres of excellence at an international level and act as fundamental voices for the thousands of companies that operate in the innovation and technology sector.
